PROTECTION OF CAPE VERDE MONKEYS

Protecting green monkeys by contributing to the preservation of biodiversity, the fight against climate change and the promotion of nature tourism.

Objectives & activities

OBJ1: ASSISTANCE TO MONKEYS THAT ARE ABANDONED, INJURED, ABUSED, OR ENTRUSTED BY THEIR OWNERS OR BY THE AUTHORITIES

  • Installation of a shelter to take care of wild animals 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, and in particular monkeys that are orphaned, injured, abandoned or can no longer be kept by their owner and provide them with a safe and suitable environment with the aim to reintegrate them into their natural environement when possible.
  • Setting up a specialized veterinary clinic for primates.
  • Setting up a team of animal caretakers and adequate equipment for the capture, transport and safe handling of monkeys.
  • Creation of an information space on monkeys.
  • Organization of guided tours of the refuge for schools, associations, groups, etc.

OBJ 2: FIGHT AGAINST MONKEY MALTREATMENT

  • Carrying out information and advice actions for the general public on the conditions of captivity of monkeys
  • Development of information materials
  • Reporting cases of abuse of monkeys to national authorities
  • Recovering or capturing the monkeys at the request of the owners or the request of the authorities
  • Awareness sessions in schools.

OBJ3: PROTECTING MONKEYS IN THEIR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, PRESERVING BIODIVERSITY AND ACTING AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

  • Creation of a protected area (reserve) for the reintegration of the monkeys of the refuge
    which could become a center for scientific studies and an attractive tourist spot (ecotourism).
  • Reintegration of the monkeys from the refuge into a protected area when possible
  • Census of monkeys on the island of Santiago and Brava and mapping of habitat areas based on proven methodologies
  • Make monkey damage estimates
  • Assistance to farmers for the protection of agricultural areas to limit the damage done by monkeys in search of food.
  • Rehabilitation and reforestation of forests with communities
  • Develop ecological and ecosystem knowledge related to monkeys.
  • Create scientific partnerships with universities, international organizations, associations of primatologists.
  • Participate and contribute in interventions on the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems and the fight against climate change.
  • Develop awareness tours on the role of monkeys in their natural environment for schools, influencers, and ecotourism groups.

OBJ 4. MOBILIZING THROUGH INFORMATION, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH ACTIONS

  • Organizing information, education and communication campaigns to make young people and the population aware of the need to preserve biodiversity and protect monkeys.
  • Organizing regional / international conferences on the preservation of Vervet monkeys in Cabo Verde / participate in international conferences abroad.
  • Developing partnerships with other international shelters, associations and international organizations.
