HISTORY

It is the only association dedicated to the protection of monkeys in Cape Verde.

The association does not limit itself solely to the protection of monkeys and does not exclude assisting other wild animals, born or not in captivity when necessary.

To meet the needs of safeguarding the monkeys of Cape Verde, the non-profit and general public utility association called "Santuario dos Macacos de Cabo Verde" with legal capacity, was created in March 2021 in Cape Verde. Extract N° 194/2021 Boletim Oficial N°47, March 16, 2021. (NIF N°585639302).

The association's headquarters are located on the island of Santiago, in the space of the Ecolodge Morgana, but it is active at a national level.
Partnerships are being developed with universities, associations, NGOs, international organizations active in the protection of wildlife and monkeys in particular, but also active in the preservation of biodiversity and the fight against climate change.

MISSION & VISION

  • The non-profit association "Monkey Sanctuary" is an organization, active at the national level, dedicated to the protection of wild animals, born or not in captivity, with a particular focus on monkeys. In this context, the association can provide assistance to any other wild animal, born or not in captivity, which is in pain or in danger of death.
  • The "Monkey Sanctuary" is an association dedicated to helping animals in need, taking care of injured, abandoned and orphaned animals, and releasing those who have regained their health in their natural habitat when possible.
  • To do this, the association organizes and manages a refuge for immediate assistance to monkeys and other wild animals, as well as a protected area (reserves) for their reintegration into a natural environment when possible.

  • The association claims to become a player in sustainable development in Cape Verde by integrating into its intervention strategy the Sustainable Development Goals and the guidelines given by the Convention on Biological Diversity of the United Nations and any other specialized organization (IUCN, WWF , IPBEF, etc.).
  • Through educational actions, the association raises community awareness of the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, and promotes actions to fight against climate change.

  • The main objective of the refuge is to take care of animals in distress or suffering and to reintroduce them into their natural environment or into a protected area/reserve, when possible. For some of the animals welcomed at the shelter, reintroduction is not possible and these animals find a permanent home, cared for by a team of employees and volunteers.
  • The refuge and the protected areas managed by the association are also centers for research and scientific studies, which can attract scientists from all over the world to study the unique animals and ecosystems of Cape Verde.

The principles that guide our actions

« To live in harmony with nature » is the founding message of our association.

It is a matter of reconciling the needs of human well-being and the conservation of animal species, with the aim of preserving biodiversity for our children and our grandchildren.

Refer to the recommendations of national and international organizations specializing in the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems.

Mainly national bodies and international bodies and organizations such as WWF, IPBES, IPCC, United Nations, IUCN, etc.), and in particular the Convention on Biological Diversity of 1992. Signed by 168 heads of government at the Rio Summit in 1992, the Convention on Biological Diversity is dedicated to promoting sustainable development and represents a major step forward in the conservation of biological diversity. The vision of the new framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (post 2020) is "a world of life in harmony with nature" with the objective in particular of substantially increasing the number of protected areas in the world.
At the national level, the activities of the association refer to the"Strategy and National Action Plan for Biodiversity 2014-2030" from the Ministry of the Environment, Housing and Regional Planning.

Favoring an integrated approach, because acting for the protection of monkeys means being an actor in the preservation of biodiversity and the fight against climate change.

In the spirit of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the Convention on Biological Diversity, the association will intervene on several themes and sectors crucial for the preservation of animal species; the preservation of biodiversity, the fight against climate change, the sustainable management of forests, the reduction of poverty in particular in rural areas, by collaborating with different actors, because raising awareness of social and environmental issues for all stakeholders , is necessary.

Take into account the needs of local communities in interventions for the preservation of biodiversity, ecosystems and the protection of monkeys.

The association supports tourist activities focusing on wildlife, in particular ensuring the self-financing of protected areas or animal sanctuaries.

In order to develop sustainable tourism, the preservation of monkeys represents natural capital and inestimable economic value for local communities. According to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) ecotourism is "environmentally responsible travel and visitation of relatively undisturbed natural settings for the purpose of appreciating nature - as well as any past cultural manifestations or present observable from these environments.
