Thus, for more than 500 years, monkeys have lived alongside the inhabitants of rural towns on the island of Santiago and Brava, the only two islands in Cape Verde where the green monkey is present. <span class=\"\">We can say that the monkey is part of the culture of the Cape Verdeans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The green monkey has also been introduced to the islands of Barbados, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-610-1-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-610-1-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-image so-widget-sow-image-default-8b5b6f678277-610\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"sow-image-container\">\n\t\t<img \n\tsrc=\"https:\/\/greenmonkeysanctuary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_20181022_1227215.jpg\" width=\"1363\" height=\"1507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenmonkeysanctuary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_20181022_1227215.jpg 1363w, https:\/\/greenmonkeysanctuary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_20181022_1227215-271x300.jpg 271w, https:\/\/greenmonkeysanctuary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_20181022_1227215-926x1024.jpg 926w, https:\/\/greenmonkeysanctuary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_20181022_1227215-768x849.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1363px) 100vw, 1363px\" alt=\"\" \t\tclass=\"so-widget-image\"\/>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-610-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-610-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-610-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div class=\"so-rounded panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-610-2-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #335024;\"><b><span class=\"\">Without rapid action in favor of better management of the monkey population, it could disappear very quickly.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-610-2-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><strong><span>This is the observation made by the association on the basis of an empirical study carried out throughout this first year of activity.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Very little is mentioned in the various situation reports and strategic documents of national institutions related to the environment and biodiversity. <\/span><span>The green monkey is not yet considered endangered on the African continent. The green monkey \"Chlorocebus sabaeus\" was in 2020 classified by the IUCN in the red list of species threatened with extinction as \"Least concern\". <span class=\"\">However, a downward trend in the population of monkeys has been observed in their natural geographical areas (Burkina Faso, C\u00f4te d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia; Mali; Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-610-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-610-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-610-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div class=\"so-rounded panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-610-3-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #335024;\"><b>Regularly hunted or captured, the population of Cape Verde monkeys is estimated by the association to be in a situation of great vulnerability because the threats are numerous with a relatively high risk of extinction.<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-610-3-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"7\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<div id=\"panel-62-3-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"7\">\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n<p><b><span><span class=\"\">The pressure the monkey population is under is growing <\/span><\/span><\/b><span><span class=\"\">; <\/span><span class=\"\">lack of data and protection actions, hunting, capture, agricultural and urban expansion, increasingly limited territory, deforestation, effects of climate change, etc... By way of comparison, on the island of Barbados (area of \u200b\u200b430 km2), half the size of the island of Santiago, where the green monkey was introduced at the same time, the population of green monkeys is estimated at 14,000 individuals and 60,000 in St Kits and Nevis, an island of 269 km2 with a population of 53,000 inhabitants!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-610-5\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-610-5-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-610-5-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"11\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<div id=\"pg-62-5\" class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\">\n<div id=\"pgc-62-5-0\" class=\"panel-grid-cell\">\n<div id=\"panel-62-5-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"11\">\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n<p><span>One of the first scientific texts on Cape Verde green monkeys from 2011 (Introduced mammals of Cape Verde. The green monkey is also called \"the gardener monkey\" because, by biting fruits and plants, it contributes to the maintenance and regeneration of forests by dispersing specific seeds (pollination).
